About Gaza

A Palestinian surgeon's return to Gaza

About Gaza Ghassan Abu-Sitta left his well-paid job as a surgeon in England to return to his homeland of Palestine and care for victims of the occupation.
“Even though I’ve never lived in Gaza, it’s a place that I’ve always regarded as home,” he explains. However, his work in Gaza is a world away from the well-equipped operating theatres of London. Operations are frequently delayed because vital equipment cannot be brought in when the checkpoints are closed. The sense of desolation is everywhere. “Despair very quickly creeps in,” he admits. He is also shocked at the level of senseless violence. “When I operated on patients I was filled with the overwhelming sense that these bodies were violated for political ends.” He finds himself empathising with the militants and takes us to see Palestinian fighters. “This occupation is a violation of our rights, our land and our people,” one complains. However Ghassan remains committed to using peaceful methods to help his fellow Palestinians: “By treating them, I am taking part in pushing back the violence.”
