French Paradox

French Paradox Despite having one of the richest diets on the planet, the French have one of the lowest rates of obesity and heart disease anywhere. They, quite literally, eat to their hearts' content.
It seems that the greater our obsession with losing weight, the more we pile it on. But the French have always taken great delight in defying dietary conventions. "We don't like 'low fat this, sugarless that' because it doesn't taste good," explains Mireille Guillano, author of 'French Women Don't Get Fat.' For the French, food is something to take pleasure from. But by not restricting themselves, they actually eat less. As Mireille explains, "If you eat slowly, your taste buds will be satisfied after a few bites so you don't need to eat much." But the real key to the French diet is the prominent position it gives to wine. "Two to four drinks are associated with a 50% reduction of the risk of heart attacks," explains cardiologist Dr Lorgeril. It seems like the craziest diet of all is simply to enjoy what you eat. (C9)
