Is Iraq about to become a strict Islamic state? The proposed Iraqi constitution defines Islam is the undisputed source of all laws. Little wonder moderates are worried. “This is much scarier than anything we have seen before,” despairs woman’s rights activist Yanar Muhammad. “It ignores human rights and gives priority to Sharia law.” Other minorities are also concerned. Until now, the Mandean Sect has practised their religion freely because Iraq has always been a secular country. Now, they’re worried about the future. But despite this, their leaders are advising them to support the Constitution. “If we say no, we expect the next draft to be even worse,” explains leader Malik Mal-Allah. The Constitution may be a mandate to theocracy but to many Iraqis, it’s also the only hope of a viable political solution. (Guardian)
