Australia - Saving Terry's Hands

Australia - Saving Terry's Hands When ten year old Terry lost both his hands and a foot in a freak accident, he thought he'd be handicapped for life. But thanks to a dramatic world first, doctors were able to save his hands.
"I'm really, really lucky", beams Terry. "It could have chopped my head off." He was playing basketball with his friends when a wall collapsed, severing his hands and a foot. "I learned in school if you cut yourself and cry, you bleed more so I knew it was important to stay calm", he recalls. Dr Robert Love was faced with the virtually impossible task of saving the limbs. "Time was very, very much against us." There was no guarantee Terry would even survive the surgery. The chances of getting all the specialists together at such short notice were a million to one. But against the odds, doctors succeeded in saving his hands. Terry remains philosophical beyond his years and it is now hoped he'll make a full recovery "I'm so happy to be alive and to have my hands back." (C9)
