Rule of Terror

Rule of Terror Since emergency law was imposed in Bangladesh, as many as 200,000 people have been rounded up by the military.
Last January, troops took to the streets after democracy was suspended and imposed draconian emergency rule. "People have been picked up without any kind of evidence and tortured", laments human rights activist Farhad Mazhar. Army run interrogation centres operate all over the country. Those who escape from them tell a disturbingly similar tale. "I really thought that I would die", states Protap Jambil, describing how he was tortured for four hours. His brother-in-law, arrested with him, was tortured so severely he died. But the army denies all allegations of abuse. As Army Chief, General Ahmed, states; "There are no such things going on".
