The Divide (HD)

The Divide (HD) 18 months into the civil war in the Ukraine, over 6500 people have been killed and almost a million displaced. With unprecedented access this report takes us to forces on both sides of the front line.

"If I could have seen their faces, knowing that I killed a living person... that would've been very hard", says Frantsuz, a pro-government volunteer who has been fighting for seven months. He looks across the frontline to the enemy in the village of Shyrokyne, gateway to strategic port of Mariupol. Across the divide a pro-Russian separatist called Jack is returning the gaze. While steadfast in his resolve to fight, the cameras capture the human face of this often shrouded enemy. "War is frightening", he says. "I'm not a robot. I feel, I love, I suffer, I cry." The conflict may have dropped down the international news agenda, but bitter fighting continues and the levels of hatred on both sides of the divide are escalating as they become increasingly distant from one another, and increasingly polarised.
