Saami People

What are the Swedish reindeer herders' land rights?

Saami People The nomadic reindeer herders of northern Sweden are coming under pressure.
Reindeer are destroying the forests and turning them into tundra desert. As the Saami bring in their herds for calf marking its clear modern technology has allowed them to sustain much larger herds than was traditionally possible. And with these herds comes a heavy environmental price. The Saami claim that the summer pastures are their land, and they have grazing rights over the forest winter pastures. The Swedish government claims it is Crown land and the Saami must respect other land users and the environment. With the stunning landscape of north Sweden as a backdrop, this film investigates the conflict between the Swedes and the Saami whose traditional reindeer herding is under threat.
