Strictly Ballroom

The township kids ruling the ballroom

Strictly Ballroom In South Africa’s townships, ballroom dancing is conquering the dance floors, and it’s an encouragingly mixed-race affair.
It’s heads up and smiles on for 11-year-olds Siswe and Tato, two of ballroom's latest converts. “If I play soccer, I get hurt and that’s not nice. I choose dancing…it keeps me off the streets.” Ballrooms’ growing popularity has elevated it to the third most popular South African pastime after football and boxing. And whilst some clubs are still whites only, many are becoming mixed. At the latest contest social differences are swept aside - it's winning that matters. The couples tango and cha-cha into the judges’ favour.
