Vryburg High

Dispelling racial tension in a South African school

Vryburg High The end of year ‘Matric’ dance is the biggest event on the Vryburg social calendar. Vryburg High has come a long way since the racial violence of a few years ago - but more progress is needed.
Vryburg is a small town in the north west of South Africa right on the edge of the Kalahari. In February 1998 a group of white parents went on the rampage armed with batons beating and attacking black students. In the resulting frenzy a white boy was stabbed by his black classmate Andrew Babeile. The school was closed. The parents were acquitted, whilst Babeile was sent to jail. But now a new strict Principal has brought stability with his black deputy. Vryburg High School still maintains two separate streams, English and Afrikaans. We spend the day with two boys. All of Kobus's teachers are white as are his classmates. whilst Dumile's classes are mostly black. "Most of them are glad to be leaving Vryburg High this year... They’ve had enough of beatings, enough of violence.. everything. However Year 6 really enjoy the school.”
