International pressure is increasing on Beijing over social and sexual issues, with Amnesty International, Sweden and the US Congress all condemning policies which have led to compulsory sterilisation and abortion as well as the abuse of young girls. In a country where women still bound their feet at the beginning of the century, sexual liberation is emerging 30 years after the West. The views of thousands of years are finally being challenged.
