The first reported case of AIDS in Indonesia occurred in Bali. It was back in 1987, and the patient was a foreigner who was in Bali at the time. When we knew about that one case involving a foreigner, my colleagues wanted to find out how deep the problem was in Bali. How far had HIV spread across Bali?
We tested four hundred blood samples and one came back as HIV positive. And it was from an Indonesian, a Balinese in fact, so obviously HIV wasn't just a tourist problem.
I went to Australia to observe and learn from the AIDS cases there. Even in 1987, they had many cases that had reached the hospitalization stage. And I wondered if we had as many cases, where would we find the hospitals here? We don't have the same medical facilities in Indonesia, let alone in Bali.

I don't really know what's the meaning of "legend". I think newcomers who come to the beach - because I'm more local than them, and I'm still alive and energetic like young people - so they call me a "legend". But I don't really know what they mean. Maybe they call me that because they're like my younger brothers.

First time, only 15 days. Because of the visa.

Not really a girlfriend. Because she's Catholic. They can't divorce. Of course I wanted to have a... wife.
And after New Zealand you went to Paris?

What were you doing there?
Painting. Studying painting in Monmartre. Around 1998, maybe.
Also with a girlfriend?
Not girlfriend. When they like you, they like you. But they'll do what they want to do. A lot of women there don't want to have kids. They really want their independence. Just need me to be nice? Alright, I'll be nice. It's a business, so why not?
So she took you to Paris, but then she left you?
No, I stayed there with her. And that's when I realised I don't like European life.
We have nice weather. We can sit anywhere. That's what I missed. I couldn't find that there, you know. And my partner was working. I'd just stay alone. Nobody would talk to me.
I have lived together with someone for two years.
With the New Zealand one?
No. Australian. But it was still the same thing. Different lifestyles as well. You need to be similar in character, you know.
