Dialogue

00:32

ON SCREEN TEXT: Deep in the jungles of southern Nepal a curious tribe has gathered from all four points of the compass. The tribal curators consort in secret, discussing handicaps, unusual rules and other oddities.  All in preparation for the Big Game.

00:57

You played off five goals last year.  You know that?  We played off 5 believe it or not.  But then we're true gentlement.

01:09

You want me to read it out to you?  Last year EFG were 5.  Mongolia? Mongolia were 3.  Tigresses? Tigresses were 2.  Rusty Kukris? Rusty Kukris were 0.

01:27

Peter I have another point.  Now inside the "D", a foul is given in front of the goal now...(fade out)

04:45

Bacon and an omlette please.

04:48

I'll have some cheese and…

06:35

(slowly fading up commentary) shortly after, which is 1982, with the Maharaja of Jaipur -- their good friend bubbles -- and as they were there they discovered that someone was possibly able to make long sticks even for an elephant.  So James immediately instructed the stick makers in Jaipur to make long elephant polo sticks over a hundred inches and the very day he confirmed that in fact they could be made, he telexed Jim Edwards, "have long sticks, get elephants ready!"

07:13

This is not the elephants regular job.  They are quite used to going to the jungle and taking a bath and all that, this is completely different from their day to day routine.

07:25

I would say, elephants know the polo better than the people.  The people keep changing, they have no idea.  But the elephants know.  They are really smart.

07:38

I think if you've got a really good connection with your driver and your elephant than your going to do better than if you don't.  This game is all about relationships, it's all about having three brains going in the same direction doing the same thing.

07:53

So Ladies and gentlement the announcements are over and we welcome all of you to Karnali, Bardia Lodge Tiger Tops for the 31st World Elephant Polo Assocation World Championships

08:10

Keep it close, and tap it.  It's going to be great.

08:13

The thing is Gulab Kali is the best if she's not tired.  Because she's the oldest elephant she gets tired quite quickly.

08:20

You're going to the get the 8 set of elephants in the first half so we can go out with our strongest team and then we'll review our tactics come second half with a meeting.

09:04

So, this is going to be a siege.  I think we're going to see a lot of action from Kathmandu at the end of this round.

09:18

This is the reason we have a referee and an umpire, just to make sure everything is fair and correct and played properly.  I believe it's going to be a "bully up" in the center with the key players there.

09:31

The whistle blows. The bulls in.  Thom misses it, Peter misses it.

09:35

You can see the Mexican Wave revolving around the stadium this morning.

09:40

Grand polo shot ladies and gentlement!  Champagne polo!

09:43

Good contact from Mel's Angels and Tom Tuke striking that ball through to the number 2 shirt.

09:48

Plays it past, keeps the ball, lovely dribbling.

09:51

And she puts it through, it's right on the line, it has not been flagged yet. There's no goal yet... And it’s a GOAL to Equestrio Arabia! San Prentice showing her years of experience there, which belies the fact that she's still only 19 years old.

10:08

The problem is that your too pretty. I could have stopped every single one of those goals….

10:13

He's such a gnetlemen! He's so lovely!

10:17

She smiled and I went all sort of gooey.

10:20

I need to get back to England, I need to sit on a 10 foot wall in my garden, with a seat or saddle strapped to it and a long stick…

10:51

ON SCREEN TEXT: The Favorites.  "There are rules to luck, not everything is chance to the wise…luck can be aided by skill"

10:57

What are you calling him?

10:59

Dobbers.  Dobbers

11:00

The Mongolians, if you're going to bring 3 of Ghengis's own who have already played horse polo and have grown up with horses at the age of 2 hours, and 2 of which have played elephant polo before,  then it's going to go horribly wrong for everyone else.

11:14

It's proper man sport at its best

11:15

The mongolians have actually got a forearm the size of my calf.

11:30

Even if they score a first goal in the second chukker, you needn't worry because  you will score three goals in this chukker and you will win the world cup!  OK?

11:38

Yes let's go for it!

11:40

I think I'm going to use a smaller stick.

11:53

And they're off!  You can see the dust rising as their sticks go in just desperately trying to dig that ball out of the mud and the dust.  You  never can tell at WEPA what's quite going to happen.

12:07

As the pooper scoopers come on to the pitch --

12:10:00

It's not though, it's Sam Prentice and it's an enormous shot.

12:13

We see this tussle, rarely have we seen such excitement at WEPA, and it goes again but it's backed by an elephants foot.

12:20

And again, Dobbers is tough enough to knock it past. And that goal opens up outside and he's never going to miss it,

13:48
