My name’s Namak Khoshnaw. I was born in Iraqi Kurdistan but 14 years ago I came to Britain as a refugee.

Now I’m going back to Kurdistan. I’m making a film about honour killing. It’s a difficult subject but one that’s close to my heart.

Honour killing can happen when a Kurdish woman has a relationship with a man but without the approval of her family. As a result she risks being killed by a family member.

That is known as honour killing and when I left Kurdistan, it was seen by most people as socially acceptable.

أنا نامق خوشناو .. رأيتُ النور في كردستان العراق .. لكنني أتيتُ إلى بريطانيا لاجئا منذ أربع عشرة سنة.

سأعود إلى كردستان لإنجاز فيلم وثائقي حول جرائم الشرف .. وهو موضوع صعب لكنه قريب من قلبي.

تقع جرائم الشرف عندما تدخل امرأة كردية في علاقة مع رجل دون موافقة عائلتها، ما يعرضها لخطر التصفية على يد أحد أفراد هذه العائلة.

عندما كنت أعيش في كردستان، كانت جرائم الشرف أمرا مقبولا اجتماعيا لدى معظم الناس.

كان خياري! قلت لهم ساقتلها، اتركوا الأمر لي.

إذا لم اقم بالأمر، فسيقوم به  شخص آخر .

I’m going to find out if attitudes have changed, and whether Kurdistan is now ready to give up its tradition of killing for honour.

أنا ذاهب لمعرفة ما إذا تغيرت الظروف، وهل إقليم كردستان مستعد  الآن للتخلي عن عادة القتل دفاعا عن الشرف.

The crime is adultery, an activity that in most Western countries has long ceased to be illegal. Yet here in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, it remains a serious offence.

The woman has been arrested. And we’ve been to his house to arrest him but he had run away. But now we found where he works.

According to the law adultery crime punishment. They will be sent to prison between 1 to 7 years.

ألقي القبض على المرأة... كما توجهنا إلى منزله لاعتقاله غير أنه كان لاذ بالفرار.

المهم أننا نعرف عنوان عمله.

وقد يواجهان عقوبة الحبس من سنة لسبع سنوات وفقا للقانون.

This time the police get their man. They’re taking him into custody for his own protection.

هذه المرة.. ألقى أفراد الشرطة القبض على الرجل، سيأخذونه للمخفر من أجل سلامته.

The first thing he said, “It wasn’t me”.

في البداية أنكر كل شيء.

I went to the 2nd floor and when I made sure that it was him and then I put his hands behind his back and handcuffed him

And now we are taking him to the local police station to investigate.

عندما دخلنا أدركنا أن الرجل كان يمكن أن يفر من قبضتنا... ولا سيما أنه في الطابق الثاني... لذلك ذهبت فورا إلى الطابق الثاني.

سنأخذه لمركز الشرطة لنحقق معه.

Comm:

The raid seems to have gone ok, but the situation is potentially still lethal.

The husband has already threatened to murder his wife and her lover. So far, he’s stayed within the law. But if news of the affair leaks out, he may feel he has no choice but to kill them.

It’s an emotional tinderbox.

So the police have brought in the lovers for their own safety. They’ll be kept off the streets until tempers have cooled.

يبدو أن المداهمة نجحت، غير أن الوضع لا يزال خطيرا.

زوج العشيقة المخدوع هدد بتصفية الزوجة وعشيقها.

حتى الآن لا يزال منضبطا، غير أنه قد يشعر ألا خيار أمامه سوى

 قتلهما إذا تسربت الأنباء عن الفضيحة.

الأمر أشبه ما يكون ببرميل بارود مرشح للانفجار في أي لحظة.

لذلك أوقفت الشرطة العاشقين حفاظا على سلامتهما، وسيحتفظ بهم إلى حين أن تهدأ الأمور.

As I begin my investigation I’m aware that while many Kurds think honour crimes are a thing of the past, it’s a problem that stubbornly refuses to go away.

And soon there’s news of one of the biggest honour killing stories in years.

مع بداية هذا التحقيق، أدرك أن مشكلة جرائم الشرف شديدة الرسوخ على الرغم من أن العديد من الأكراد يظنون أنها من الماضي.

سرعان ما توالت أخبار عن واحدة من أكبر جرائم الشرف التي تحدث في البلاد منذ سنوات.

The killing had all the signs of an honour crime at first the dead woman’s identity was unknown. Later she was named as 21-year-old Sunwr Omar.

In Kurdistan, when an honour killing takes place, it’s normal for family members to collect the body. But nobody came for Sunwr.

This was when Ronak Farag got involved.

يحمل هذا القتل دلائل كونه جريمة شرف... في البداية لم يتم التعرف على هوية القتيلة... لكن في ما بعد ثبت أنها تدعى: سنوور عمر وتبلغ من العمر إحدى وعشرين سنة.

في كردستان، عندما تقع جريمة شرف، تجري العادة أن يتسلم أهل القتيلة الجثة. لكن لم يأت أحد ليتسلم جثة sunwr

وهنا يأتي دور روناك فاراغ لتتدخل.

For 25 years Ronak’s been trying to bring an end to honour killings. She runs an NGO that works to stop family disputes turning violent. She doesn’t always succeed, and she keeps pictures of the women she’s been unable to save.

تحاول روناك منذ خمس وعشرين سنة أن تضع حدا لجرائم الشرف.

تدير منظمة غير حكومية تعمل على وقف النزاعات العائلية التي قد تأخذ منحى عنيفا.

النجاح ليس دائما حليفها. وهي تحتفظ بصور النساء اللواتي لم تتمكن من إنقاذهن.

Very often.

It’s not just them. I have a folder full and I talk to them. We have dozens of unsolved cases, no one cares about them.

غالبا.

ليس فقط هذه .. بل لدي ملف مليئ بالصور وأحيانا أتحدث مع بعضهن ..

لدينا العشرات من الحالات العالقة، لا أحد يهتم.

Ronak had known Sunwr for years. She was disgusted that no-one had claimed her body, so she and her team pressed the morgue to release. 

روناك تعرف سنوور منذ سنوات.

وقد شعرت بالامتعاض من تجاهل أسرتها لها وعدم القدوم لاستلام جثمانها من المشرحة، ولذلك ضغطت للإفراج عن جثتها.

I’d never seen the media devote so much attention to an honour killing. It made me think maybe something was changing in Kurdistan. 

لم أر من قبل اهتماما بهذا الشكل من وسائل الإعلام بجريمة شرف .. وهذا ما دفعني للاعتقاد بأن شيئا ما يتغير في كردستان.

أُطلق عليها الرصاص على مرأى ومسمع من سكان هذه المدينة وحتى الآن لا يزال قاتلوها أحرارا.

الآن بعد أن تعالت الأصوات لوقف العنف ضد النساء علينا أن نتحد لفرض عقوبات أشد على الجناة.

It’s now more than three weeks since Sunwr was killed. As Muslims, Kurds bury their dead within 24 hours. Sunwr’s story has been kept in the news by the public outrage at  family’s apparent disrespect in not taking her body

أكثر من ثلاثة أسابيع مضت على مقتل سنوور.

ووفقا للشريعة الإسلامية في كردستان يُوارى جثمان الفقيد الثرى في ظرف أربع وعشرين ساعة، غير أن عدم قدوم عائلة سنوور لاستلام الجثمان جعل الحدث في صدارة العناوين الإخبارية .

وكل هذا ولد غضبا شعبيا.

يعترينا شعور بالغضب لأن هناك برلمانيين وناشطات نسويات ومنظمات أخرى طالبوا بإرجاع جثتها.

من حقها أن تُدفن بشكل لائق ووفقا للشريعة الاسلامية .

One member of the family is absent. Sunwr’s father, Omar Raza, hasn’t been seen since the day she died.

منذ اليوم الذي ماتت فيه سنوور اختفى فرد من عائلتها بشكل لافت .. إنه أبوها عمر رضا .

The PM and others talk about democracy and say they have given right to women, is that the right? That we couldn’t even give her a normal burial like a human being.

يتحدث رئيس الوزراء وآخرون عن الديمقراطية قائلين إنهم منحوا المرأة حقوقها، هل هذه هي الحقوق؟

هذه الفتاة لم نستطع ان ندفنها بشكل لائق مثل البشر.

Comm:

An honour killing is always carried out by a close relative. Sunwr had no brothers, so her father is a natural suspect. And according to Ronak, he’d never disguised his intentions.

الأقارب هم غالبا من يقدمون على ارتكاب جرائم الشرف .. وليس لسنوور أي إخوة، لذا يظل والدها هو المشتبه فيه، الأول .

ووفقا لما تقوله روناك فإنه لم يُخف نواياه أبدا.

We knew that she would get killed because her father clearly told me…that wherever he sees her, he would kill her.

كنا نعلم بأنها ستُقتل لأن أباها قال لي بوضوح ... إنه  سيقتلها حيثما يراها

Such behaviour by a woman, or even an allegation against her, is seen as shaming the entire family. This belief probably originates in tribal customs, and is found in many countries around the world. The solution is almost always violence against the woman.

أي اتهام لشرف امرأة حتى لو كان ادعاء ينظر اليه كعار يلطخ سمعة العائلة برمتها، وهذا أمر موجود في العديد من دول العالم بسبب بعض الأعراف القبلية .

أما الحل فيكون دائما وفي أغلب الأحيان باللجوء لتعنيف المرأة.

Once such crime in 2007 shocked the whole of Kurdistan. Mobile phones captured the murder of a 17-year-old girl called Doa. She belonged to the Yazidi faith but lived in a Kurdish village. A large crowd stoned her to death because she wanted to marry a non-Yazidi. The footage shows local police standing by, doing nothing.

The images were shown globally. They brought shame to Kurdistan, but also a political will to tackle the problem. Soon the government was spending money on shelters to protect the victims, while new NGOs sprang up

to support them.

ذات يوم من أيام ألفين وسبعة اهتزت كردستان برمتها على وقع جريمة مماثلة صُور فيها عبر أجهزة الهاتف المحمول مقتل فتاة أيزيدية تدعى دعاء وتبلغ من العمر سبع عشرة سنة.

الفتاة رُجمت حتى الموت من قبل جمع غفير من سكان قريتها لأنها كانت تريد الزماج من شاب عبر يزيدي .

وأظهرت لقطات الفيديو أن الشرطة هناك وقفت قرب الجمع مكتوفة الأيدي.

انتشرت تلك الصور عالميا .. انها صور جلبت العار لكردستان ولكن أيضا دفعت أطيافا سياسية للتحرك وتطويق المشكل، فسرعان ما خصصت الحكومة أموالا للملاجئ لحماية الضحايا كما ظهرت منظمات حكومية جديدة تٌعنى بدعمها.

I wanted to know more about Sunwr. She’d spent her whole life here in Sulaymaniyah. Her parents had separated and she lived mostly with her grandfather, who owned a small shop.

كنت أريد معرفة المزيد عن سنوور.

قضت حياتها كلها هنا في السليمانية، انفصل والداها فعاشت معظم الوقت مع جدها، الذي كان يملك متجرا صغيرا.

When she was 17 she began a relationship with a boy of about the same age – but without her father’s knowledge.

عندما بلغت السابعة عشرة من عمرها، بدأت علاقة مع فتى من سنها، ولكن من دون علم والدها.

She was in a love relationship with a boy –she was 17 what can she know about love at this age?

كانت في علاقة غرامية مع أحد الفتية.

هل يمكنك تصور الأمر .. كانت في السابعة عشرة .. هل بإمكانهما أن يفهما أي شيء عن الحب؟

She was very active and had many dreams. She wanted to be free.

كان النشاط يملؤها وأحلامها كثيرة .. كانت تريد أن تكون حرة.

Comm:

The couple planned to make a new life together. Sunwr secretly took around two and half thousand dollars in cash from her grandfather’s shop and gave it to her boyfriend. He’d told her he was serious about them being together.

كلاهما كان يخطط لتأسيس حياة جديدة معا، لذا أخذت سنوور سرا ألفين وخمس مائة دولار من متجر جدها ومنحتها لحبيبها، ولا سيما أنه أخبرها أنه جاد في ارتباطهما.

The boy promised to marry her, but for some reason he disappeared - he didn’t marry her.

وعدها الشاب بالزواج لكنه اختفى .. لم يتزوجها.

Comm:

Sunwr’s grandfather told the police about the stolen money. And insisted they press charges. Sunwr was arrested, and later sentenced to a year in prison.

ابلغ جد سنوور الشرطة بقصة السرقة .. وأصر على تقديم الدعوة فاعتقلت سنوور، وحكم عليها بالسجن مدة سنة.

On her release she to this shelter, its for women who’ve fled their families and are still in fear for their lives.

بعد إطلاق سراحها، جاءت هنا، لهذا المأوى للنساء.

انه للائي فررن من أسرهن ولا يزلن في خوف على حياتهن.

She came to our shelter and we looked after her well.

She always wanted to go out of the shelter, she self-harmed several times. She tried to jump out of the window and broke them.

She questioned herself, “Why should I be in this shelter?” ““Living here or dying outside is the same for me. I am dead here, no one asks after me.

There were many occasions that we had to meet up especially meet up just to talk about Sunwr.

أتت إلى مأوانا، وقدمنا لها كامل العناية.

كانت دائما تريد الخروج من المأوى، وقد أصيبت بجروح مرات عدة عند محاولتها القفز من النافذة بعد كسرها.

كانت تتسائل  ...

"العيش هنا أو الموت في الخارج سيان بالنسبة لي. أنا ميتة هنا، ولا أحد يسأل عني. "

كان علينا الاجتماع أكثر من مرة فقط للحديث عن سنوور.

Comm:

Sunwr’s father was still threatening to kill her. But

so long as she stayed in the shelter, she was safe.

كان والدها يهدد بقتلها، لكن طالما بقيت في المأوى طالما ظلت في أمان.

Comm:

Ronak did all she could for Sunwr. She even managed to get her a job in a government office. I’d heard that while working there, she and a colleague had become friends.

قدمت روناك كل ما يمكنها لسنوور.، ومكنتها من وظيفة في مكتب حكومي.

وقد سمعت أنها خلال عملها هذا، جمعتها صداقة مع إحدى الزميلات.

I want to ask Sunwr’s friend about her, so I’m going with Ronak to the office where she still works.

أريد أن أسأل صديقة سنوور عنها، لذلك انا ذاهب مع روناك إلى المكتب حيث لا تزال تعمل.

It’s in a sensitive location. On our way there we’re asked to stop filming.

إنه في موقع حساس. في طريقنا طُلب منا وقف التصوير.

Sunwr’s friend wishes to remain anonymous but is willing to talk about Sunwr – and her father.

طلبت صديقة سنوور عدم الكشف عن هويتها لكنها مستعدة للتحدث عن سنوور و والدها.

She knew that the father was threatening her because we told her that.

كانت تعرف بأن والدها يهددها، نحن اخبرناها.

Yes, calling in the shelter saying

“I don’t have a daughter by the name of Sunwr” 

نعم… كان يخبر المأوى قائلا

"ليست لدي ابنة تدعى سنوور”

Comm:

The friend says that while they were working together, Sunwr confided in her about a new relationship. Senseing troublet the friend tried to persuade Sunwr to end it.

تقول إحدى صديقاتها إن سنوور أخبرتها حينما كانا يعملان معا بسر علاقة جديدة .. وقد حاولت اقناعها بوقف هذه العلاقة.

She knew how this family were.

عرفت كيف كانت هذه العائلة.

She also knew that her father would kill her

كانت على علم بنية أبيها أن يقتلها

Yes, I even warmed her. I told her don’t go this family is not good. But she insisted

نعم، لقد حذرتها.

قلت لها لا تذهبي .. هذه العائلة ليست جيدة. لكنها أصرت على الأمر

So you warned her not to go out?

إذن .. حذرتها من الخروج؟

59.  Sunwr’s friend

Yes, she said  “I’m fed up and want to marry this boy.”

I told her you’ve already done one mistake.

“your father will find out that this family is not good”. It was her own fault.

نعم، قالت: "أنا ضقت ذرعا بالأمر وأريد الزواج من هذا الشاب."

قلت لها لقد سبق أن ارتكبت خطأ فادحا.

"والدك سيكشف أن هذه العائلة ليست عائلة جيدة".

كان خطأها.

It wasn’t fully her fault. She wanted to have love and attention because she didn’t have that from her parents.

لم يكن خطأها لوحدها .. لقد كانت تبحث عن الحب والاهتمام اللذين لم تلقهما من أبويها.

It was her fault for leaving here.

وكان ذنبها الوحيد هو أنها غادرت.

Yes, I agree. She knew that as soon as he was on the streets and out of the shilter, that her father would kill her.

نعم .. أتفق معك.

كانت تعلم أنها حالما تخرج للشوارع،  فإن والدها سيقتلها.

Comm:

In summer 2015 Sunwr, now 21, quit her job and married her new boyfriend. But three years after she’d left home, it seems her father still wanted to kill her.

في صيف عام ٢٠١٥، وببلوغها إحدى وعشرين سنة ..  تركت وظيفتها وتزوجت صديقها الجديد.

و بعد ثلاث سنوات من تركها المنزل، بدا أن والدها ما زال مصرا على قتلها.

Ronak’s top prority was to stop him. Her team remembered him from Sunwr’s time in the shelter. They knew he was dangerous.

كانت روناك تعتقد أنها تستطيع منعه من الإقدام على قتل بنته ففريقها كان يتذكره منذ وقت سنوور في المأوى.

وكانوا يعلمون أنه شخص خطير.

65.  NGO women:

We tried hard to convince him (the father) to take Sunwr back because she had changed.

He said, “Ok let her comeback but she has to live with me not her aunties and grandfather”.

“she has to live with me and must not leave the house”

He said, “I will listen to you and take her back, but if she goes up to the roof and a strong wind makes her fall to the ground…”

“…or if the gas heater blows up don’t blame me.”

She is a woman she is cooking and might burn herself.

When he realised that we weren’t going to give back under these conditions he threaten and siad.

 “Even if she doesn’t get married, as soon as she is out of the shelter…”

“I don’t care about the government, the law nor anything”

“I can even kill her right now in the shelter but I’m patient. I will kill her when she comes out”.

حاولنا جاهدين إقناع الأب بالموافقة على ارجاع سنوور لأنها قد تغيرت.

وقال: "حسنا دعوها تعود ولكنها يجب ان تعيش معي لا مع خالاتها أو جدها”.

“يجب ان تعيش معي، ولا تخرج من المنزل"

وقال: "أنا سأصغي لكم وأعيدها، ولكن إذا صعدت إلى السطح وأسقطتها الرياح القوية على الأرض ..."

"... أو إذا انفجر في وجهها سخان الغاز فلا تنحو علي باللائمة."

إنها امرأة وهي تطبخ وقد تحرق نفسها.

وعندما أدرك أننا لن نوافق علي ارجاعها في ظل هذه الظروف، هدد وقال "حتى لو لم تتزوج فإن مصيرها هو الخروج من هذا المأوى ..

..."

"لا تهمني لا الحكومة و لا القانون ولا أي شيء"

"أنا استطيع قتلها حتى وهي في المأوى الآن ولكنني أتحلى بالصبر.  سأقتلها عندما تخرج ".

In these circumstances, Sunwr’s death appeared almost inescapable. It was like a car crash in slow motion.

في ظل هذه الظروف، بدا موت سنوور أمرا شبه محتم.

وكان أشبه باستعراض حادث سيارة بطريقة بطيئة.

Ronak’s about to show me where the killing finally took place.

روناك سترشدني لموقع حادث القتل الذي وقع أخيرا.

On 2^nd October 2015, Sunwr was sitting on a bench in this park. No-one knows why she’d come here.

في الثاني من أكتوبر عام ٢٠١٥، كانت سنوور تجلس على أحد المقاعد في هذه الحديقة،  لا أحد يعرف السبب وراء مجيئها إلى هنا.

I don’t think it was a plan to kill her in this park. He said I will kill her anywhere I see her in Kurdistan. The day Sunwr came to the park. The father must have been told that she was here. He came, saw her, and killed her. If not in this park he would have killer her anywhere.

لا أعتقد بان قتلها كان مخططا له في هذه الحديقة.

لقد قال أبوها إنه سيقتلها في أي مكان يراها فيه في كردستان،.

لا شك أن الأب كان على علم بمجيئها إلى الحديقة.

أتى فرآها ثم قتلها .. ولو لم يقتلها في هذا المنتزه لقتلها حتما في مكان آخر.

كان الأمر مهما بالنسبة له وكان قد قال: قال لو بقي يوم واحد في حياتي فإنني سأغسل عاري.

Ronak, her colleagues, people in the media – everyone I’d spoken to was certain the killer was Sunwr’s own father, Omar Raza. So why have the police not arrested him?

كل من تحدثت معهم بمن فيهم روناك،وزميلاتها، وأيضا الاعلاميين .. كلهم كانوا واثقين أن سنوور لفظت أنفاسها على يدي أبيها ..عمر رضا ..     فلماذا إذن لم تلق الشرطة  القبض عليه ؟

Ronak:

The big issue is not only Sunwr’s father who hasn’t been arrested. This case is infamous, but there are more than 100 suspects with arrest warrants for them and still walking free. That’s because of the mentality of the community which sees women as a symbol of family honour.

القضية الأكبر لا تتعلق بوالد سنوور الطليق فقط .. بل بالعشرات من المشتبه بهم الذين صدرت في حقهم مذكرات اعتقال ومع ذلك ما زالوا طلقاء .

كل هذا بسبب عقلية المجتمع الذي يرى في المرأة رمزا لشرف العائلة.

According to Ronak, honour killing is so deeply entrenched in Kurdish society that there’s little political will to stamp it out.

حسبما تقول روناك، فإن جرائم الشرف راسخة بعمق في أعراف المجتمع الكردي لذا تندر التحركات السياسية للقضاء عليها.

73.  Ronak:

Those officials, they give the perpetrators the right to kill a woman and they say, ‘he didn’t do it for no reason’. And these are the decision-makers.

هؤلاء المسؤولون رغم أنهم صانعو قرار يعطون مبررات لمرتكبي مثل هذه الجرائم بقولهم : يوجد سبب وراء فعلتهم .

We are about to meet Sarkawt Omer Ahmed runs the Directorate to Combat Violence Against Women. Ronak wants to know what they’re doing to catch Sunwr’s father.

ولكن بعض المسؤولين يحاول إحداث فرق، ومنهم سركوت عمر أحمد الذي يشرف على مديرية مكافحة العنف ضد المرأة.

روناك تود الاطلاع على أنشطتهم لملاحقة والد سنوور.

75.  Ronak & Sarkawt in office

Sarkawt:

The killer is known. We have no problems finding out who has done it. It’s the father.

Everything is in order and we are trying to arrest the suspect. In our first attempt to arrest him we confiscated his passport. Now he cannot leave this country through airports or border points unless he is crossing illegally.

القاتل معروف.

 ليست لدينا مشاكل أبدا في التوصل لهوية القاتل المشتبه فيه .. إنه أبوها.

كل شيء على مايرام ونحن نحاول إلقاء القبض عليه.

هناك أمر قضائي من المحكمة.

وقد صادرنا جواز سفره في محاولتنا الأولى لتضييق الخناق عليه.

لا يستطيع الآن مغادرة هذا البلد عبر المطارات أو نقاط الحدود إلا إذا كان عبر بطريقة غير مشروعة.

76.  Namak in London, staying in touch with the story

It’s now two months since Sunwr’s death. Her father is still the prime suspect, but he’s disappeared without trace. The story seems to be going cold, so I’m returning to London.

مر شهران على مقتل سنوور ولا يزال والدها مشتبها رئيسيا في الحادث غير أن أثره اختفى .

بدأ الاهتمام بالحدث يخفت .. لذا سأعود إلى لندن.

Back home with my own daughter, I think about what I’ve learnt. Many of the victims I’d heard about had been neglected by their fathers while they were growing up. But I find it hard to understand that these men took such extreme actions

أفكر وأنا في بيتي مع ابنتي في هؤلاء الضحايا .. أغلبهن غير متعلمات ولم يتمتعن بحب آبائهن الذين هجرنهن وهن في عز النضج.

Six weeks later, Ronak gets in touch she tells me the police are planning to raid the house house. Its time to go back to Kurdistan.

بعد ستة أسابيع، اتصلت روناك. لقد حان الوقت للعودة إلى كردستان.

قالت روناك إن الشرطة تخطط لمداهمة منزل والد سنوور.

79.  Raid on father’s house

Dilshad: 

He has a violent past. We saw a large number of bullets and a machete. He knows that if he is arrested that will be the end of him because he committed the murder in front of witnesses.

لديه ماض عنيف... وقد رأينا في المنزل عددا كبيرا من الرصاص و ساطوراً. إنه يعلم أنها ستكون نهايته إذا ألقي القبض عليه لأنه ارتكب جريمة قتل أمام شهود.
