Drugs

The overwhelming political influence of Mexico's drug cartels

Drugs A report of the influence of drug gangs in Mexican society.
In March 1994 the heir to the Mexican presidency Luis Donaldo Colosio was assassinated in Tijuana. Only now is it becoming clear who was responsible - drug traffickers. It is thought that Colosio 'knew too much', and thus had to be gotten rid of. He is not the only individual affected by the traffickers' power; PRI secretary-general Jose Francisco Ruiz Massieu, was assassinated in September 1994 for the same reason, and Eduardo Valle (The Owl), Mexico's former special prosecutor for the Federal Attorney General, is now in hiding. This in-depth report shows the extent to which Mexico's drug cartels have infiltrated Mexican politics and society.
