Botulism

Treating cerebral palsy with a deadly poison

Botulism Botulinum toxin, one of the deadliest poisons known to man, surprisingly has an up side - not only can it keep wrinkles at bay, but it can also help some children walk.
A small amount of botulinum toxin - or botox, for short - can be injected to paralyse certain muscles, such as those on the forehead, to iron out wrinkles. But it also has medical uses: it is used to treat cerebral palsy. For one girl, injecting the toxin into her calf muscles helped to loosen them and let her walk more normally.
