When a millimetre can mean the difference between failure and success, a new technology is enabling German surgeons to see the results of dangerous skull surgery before they make the first incision.
One in three thousand children are born with craniosynostosis, a deformation of the skull that can squash the brain. Now, pioneering surgery can reconstruct the skull and help normal development take its course. Similar techniques are possible for fractured skulls in patients of all ages. Computer modelling can help predict what the end results will look like.
