West Nile Virus When West Nile Virus broke out in New York in 1999, it caused panic. Researchers are getting closer to finding a vaccine, monitoring the cities mosquitoes, but the city remains on high alert.
Nobody knows how the virus reached New York, but it was the first time it had been seen on the North American continent. It attacks the central nervous system leading to encephalitis, and there is no known cure.
