Spymaster

The two men that robbed Peru blind

Spymaster We investigate the great Peruvian rip-off, in which former spy chief Vladamiro Montesinos and President Alberto Fujimori set out to corrupt the entire nation, from the top down.
Raya Condor makes an emotional visit to the university her son once attended. No trace remains of his brutal murder at the hands of the Colina death squad, retribution for the hostile reception Fujimori received when visiting the university. But Raya has not forgotten: “Whoever it was, they didn’t have the right. They’re going to pay.” The government of Fujimori stands accused not only of tales of torture and murder such as these, but also of bribery and corruption on a breathtaking scale. The story began to unravel in September 2000, when a tape was released of Montesinos trying to bribe an opposition politician. It was one of thousands recorded by Montesinos himself of the intelligence chief bribing members of the Peruvian elite. The videos gave Montesinos leverage for blackmail on a massive scale, allowing him to secure support for the President through his control of practically every sector in Peru. Half of Peru’s 27 million people live below the poverty line, and Chief Prosecutor of the Montesinos case, Luis Vargas, estimates that the money stolen directly from the people of Peru amounts to more than one billion US dollars. The country could take years to recover. But the irony is that many Peruvians are still campaigning for Fujimori’s return: “He’s going to come back; the Asian guy is going to come back soon!"
