Melissa's confidence and relationships have been marred by unnecessary surgery that she underwent as a child.
“At four I was taken into hospital … I was absolutely terrified and woke up in a lot of pain. No one would tell me what was happening.” It was not until she was 18 that Melissa finally discovered why she was forced to endure such painful operations. Melissa has an intersex condition. Thankfully, the treatment of intersex individuals has improved since her childhood. In this beautifully made, insightful film Melissa, Barbara, Mary and Saraswati speak candidly about living with a hermaphrodite condition.
