Daring to Speak Out
The Vietnamese government is cracking down on critics of the Communist regime, imprisoning all those who dare to speak out.
Pham Hong Son is serving a five-year prison sentence for translating a document about democracy from the US State Department's website. His wife is now under constant surveillance and struggles to raise their children. However, despite these hardships, she supports her husband's actions. "For society to develop, there has to be a democracy," she explains. And thousands of other Vietnamese agree with her: the illegal pro-democracy movement, Viet Tan, enjoys broad support. "Vietnamese people want a change because the Communist party has deprived them of basic rights," explains one dissident. It seems that the more individual liberties are repressed, the more pressure they'll be for change.
