Children At Work

Working with Explosives

Children At Work Children At Work: Thousands of Guatemalan children are forced to work in dangerous firework production, risking their lives and health to make money for their impoverished families.
Six-year-old Martha’s face was badly burnt by a firework wick whilst working for her parents. “She cries every night,” sighs her mother. Martha’s family relies on her to help produce fireworks but cannot afford a doctor to give her treatment. Young children like Martha are forced to work in the hazardous firework production industry throughout Guatemala. Explosive chemicals such as potassium nitrate and gunpowder, combined with a complete lack of health and safety regulations, means that accidents like this happen to children on a regular basis. Their parents know that this is no place for a child to work. But, with 80% of Guatemalan’s living on less than 2$ a day, the money the children bring in is desperately needed.
