The Doctor's Story Millions of women in developing countries are being denied medical aid because Bush has cut off funding for organisations which support abortion.
After three days of agonising labour, Indra Maya’s baby died in her womb. “If we were in the right place, perhaps he would have survived,” she says, still upset that no doctor was available to help. 15% of all pregnancies develop complications. But now the organisations which provide medical aid to these women are being targeted. Three years ago Bush re-imposed the Global Gag Rule, preventing American aid going to NGOs which support abortions. The effects of this have been devastating. “We almost had to close down three or four of our clinics and had to downscale services,” states Dr Nirmal Bista, head of Nepal’s Family Planning Association.
