Media High Life

The sensationalist nature of the Filipino media

Media High Life A look into the origins of the Filipino media.
After the People Power Revolution of 1986, in which Ferdinand Marcos' political reign came to an end, freedom of press was restored in the Philippines. In the '90s, the Filipino media was known as one of the region's freest, unafraid to take on the country's politicians. Yet many criticise the quality of journalism in country, blaming it for focusing on sensationalise headlines rather than thorough investigative journalism. "People think in terms of flashing headlines", laments one journalist. ABC Australia reports from the Philippines, interviewing and following prominent journalists such as TV Patrol's Gus Abergara, and exploring the young media landscape of the country.
