Ousting Aristide

Ousting Aristide Jean-Bertrand Aristide has already lost control of half the country. As the rebels move ever closer, people are starting to question how long he can survive.
In a country that's already divided, this year's carnival has become the focus of more unrest. "Carnival is where people vent their frustrations," explains one man. Rebels have vowed to seize Port-au-Prince before the celebrations end and there are constant rumours that the carnival will be sabotaged. Everyone is uneasy. It's easy to see why the government is worried. One by one, towns are falling into the hands of their enemies. Aristide remains holed up in his presidential palace and the rebels are refusing even to negotiate until he leaves. "Haiti is going to hell because Aristide is using thugs and gang members to gain control of the opposition," complains student leader Osner Fevry. "People are dying every single day." A government opposition march quickly becomes a battlefield as government supporters attack the protesters. At least 20 are injured. But Aristide's opponents refuse to be intimidated. "Aristide is playing his last card and we're not giving up," states one. The question is, who will give up first?
