Elephant Polo

Celebrating Holi with the game of the Raj

Elephant Polo The town of Jaipur in India, home to the game of polo, prepares for the festival of Holi. On this special day, they play elephant polo against a backdrop of desert plains and rose coloured palaces.
Elephant polo is a slow and ponderous game, played purely for entertainment, where goals are scored almost accidentally. Elephants wander around the pitch with painted trunks and fluorescent toenails. The event climaxes with whirling dancers, fireworks and clouds of pink, blue and yellow powder hurled at the spectators.
