Sri Lanka - At the End of a Gun

The unseen female victims of Sri Lanka's civil war

Sri Lanka - At the End of a Gun "I just don't know what will happen. We have lost everything and we were forced to suffer without any reason," says Saraswathi Ramendra. In the bloody civil war which has torn Sri Lanka apart for over 17 years, as in most other wars, it is the women civilians caught in the cross-fire who suffer. "There's death, there's injury, there's loss of loved ones. There's rape - rape goes hand in hand with conflict, we know that," says Dr Gaya Gamhewage of Save the Children. This week Life reports on how armed conflict destroys women's lives. It was filmed in Sri Lanka, but it could also have been made in any of the other 30 or so regional and ethnic conflicts, where women suffer in war.
