Brazil's Drugs War Drug lords in the favela of Rochinas are preparing for a bitter fight after President Lula authorised the army to go in and restore order.
"We're going to kill all the police," boasts a drug gang member proudly. "We're in charge here." He belongs to the infamous Red Command gang - the most powerful and feared of all the gangs. The last journalist to gain access to them was tortured and killed. Gangs like the Red Command are the real masters of Rochinas. But this may soon change if the president has his way. He's authorised the army to go in and wrest back control of the favela. Already, over a thousand police have occupied Rochinas in an attempt to restore order. But the security situation has deteriorated. "It's too much. We're all scared," confides one resident. And it's not just the army and the Red Command that they have to be frightened off. Dudu, a former drug godfather who used to control the favela, is also fighting to reclaim Rochinas. "The slum belongs to Dudu and we are hoping to take it back," states one of his lieutenants. "A lot of people are going to die." But the prospects of Dudu and the army doesn't faze the Red Command. "If they put the army on the streets we'll invade other communities," they state.
