Reluctant Friends The American-backed government in Yemen is desperate to win over hearts and minds. Their country is widely seen as recruiting ground for Al Qaeda.
"An extremist is so convinced of what he is doing that there are only two ways of dealing with him: kill him or change his mind," states theologian Judge Hittar. He tours prisons championing peaceful interpretations of the Koran as part of a government initiative to erode support for extremists. But it's a difficult task. Weapons from Yemen have been linked to Al Qaeda attacks in Kenya and Saudi Arabia; tourists have been attacked and an anti-American sentiment still persists. Even one of the country's most influential leaders, Sheik Abdullah, claims the war on terror is "a war directed against Muslims."
