The Killing of Djindjic

The Killing of Djindjic The murder of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic shocked the world. Even today, the circumstances of his death remain unclear.
In the Belgrade suburb of Zemun, police storm the headquarters of the Mafia ringleaders believed to have planned the assassination of Djindjic. Two leaders are killed during the raid but police later arrested the gunman, Zvezdan Jovanovic, who confessed to the killing. A few months later, Milorad Lukovic, the alleged mastermind, surrendered. However, he has denied responsibility and it is still unclear why Djindjic was murdered. Dobrivoijc Radavanovic believes that he was killed because he dared to take on the organised crime gangs. But he concedes that "the opponents of the Hague war trials would also have had a motive." In the wake of his death, authorities clamped down on organised crime. But many Serbs are questioning why it took the death of their leader for something to be done.
