Indonesian Justice

Indonesian Justice Attempts to reform the notoriously corrupt Indonesian justice system are being hampered by political pressures to convict suspected terrorists.
From his prison cell in Jakarta, Abu Bakar Bashir drafts a statement condemning a terrorist attack. But his sympathy with the perpetrators is clear: "Their intentions to defend Islam everywhere and to strike America are the best kind of intentions." Despite inflammatory statements like this, his supporters claim he has committed no crime. The West may revile Bashir as the mastermind behind the Bali bombing but his lawyer, Adnan Wirawan, argues there's not enough evidence to try him. Wirawan is angry that fundamental legal principles and reforms of the legal system are being cast aside in the rush to convict suspected terrorists: "We're not dealing with the law any more. We're dealing with international pressure."
