The Last Frontier

The Last Frontier The massive illegal logging industry between China and Indonesia is threatening one of the world's last pristine forests. This undercover expose reveals the scale of the black market trade.
At the Chinese port of Zhangjiagang, piles of valuable merbau logs stretch as far as the eye can see. Despite a ban exporting merbau, thousands of trees are felled every month to feed China's construction boom. "It's banned to export this cargo in Indonesia but we still manage," boasts timber baron Yaman Yeo. The timber is smuggled into the country on false Malaysian papers. It's a highly regulated trade with brokers earning vast profits. Papuan tribal chief Frederick Sagisolo is under no doubt who's running the trade. "The military people are behind this," he alleges. This illegal trade is one of the world's biggest environmental crimes.
