Women's Rights in Iraq

Women's Rights in Iraq This report raises concerns about the growing influence of Islamic fundamentalists in Iraq and their impact on women's rights.
Workingwomen in Baghdad talk about their daily life and the growing feeling of insecurity preventing them from going anywhere unaccompanied. It appears that the allied forces occupying Baghdad have caused the situation to worsen. Parallel to that, women's rights activists are worried that Iraqi society is taking a turn towards Islamic fundamentalism as followers of the Sharia increase in numbers everyday. From 23% in the early nineties, the percentage of workingwomen has fallen to 10 in 1999. Moreover new marriage and inheritance laws drastically disadvantage them.
