A Tale of Two Women

A Tale of Two Women Meet the two women building the new Afghanistan. Governor Habiba Sarabi has managed to get girls back to school and restore stability in her province. But MP Malalai Joya is having a much more difficult time.
Malalai Joya is the most recognisable woman in Afghanistan - and the most wanted. Since claiming most of the other MPs are "drug lords and criminals", she lives in constant fear of assassination. "I am not sure if I will be alive in the next hour." In parliament, her speeches are constantly interrupted and other politicians have called for her to be raped. But she remains defiant. "I accept these risks because of my people." Hundreds of miles away, Habiba Sarabi - the country's first and only female governor - has had much more success. "She is a role model", enthuses one villager. Her campaign to get girls back to school has achieved spectacular results. She's also weaned the farmers off opium, persuading them to keep goats instead. Ironically, Sarabi's biggest problem may be that her province of Bamiyan is too peaceful to warrant international attention, meaning all the aid goes to the lawless South. "She's not getting the kind of support she requires from the central government", claims Captain Ross Smith. "Where is the peace dividend for Bamiyan?"
