Siberian Tigers
As the gene pool of endangered animals like the Siberian tiger shrinks, inbreeding is becoming a serious issue. Now, one ambitious programme aims at stopping genetic problems being passed on.
"A lot of tigers are not genetically significant for conservation", states Prof Yan. He is establishing a tiger gene bank, detailing the DNA of all tigers in captivity. Those with deficiencies like blurred stripes, wonky hips or IQ defects will not be allowed to breed. But an elite group of 'alpha' tigers will be given advanced training and released into the wild.
