From Guerrilla To Government

From Guerrilla To Government We investigate the corruption discrediting the PLO.
Corruption within the Palestinian Authority is rife and Arafat hasn't fulfilled Palestinian expectations of the Peace Accords. Abu Hussein is a Palestinian hero: a resistance leader tortured by the Israelis, fed up with the Palestinian Authority. Security forces arrest him with our camera crew in the street. Former guerrilla commander General Sabawy admits enemies of Arafat's privileged clique often end up in prison. At a Gazan society wedding the groom is the son of a General close to Arafat, another exile returned to wield almost unquestioned power. His family have brought their Western dress and confidence from exile abroad. The poor suffer and millions of dollars of aid have been misspent. Dr Kronz investigated the lost funds. "This makes the people feel disappointed. This is not what we struggle for." Anonymously, a man describes how police tried to beat a confession from him. On the troubled path from revolution to democracy Gazans may have merely changed one system of oppression for another.
