Khowst

Khowst The Taliban destroyed schools and encouraged the opium trade. Now, disgruntled rural provinces such as Khowst need an economic boost. Nato-forces believe rebuilding the country's infrastructure can help bring peace.
"When the coalition forces started projects here all men could find jobs," says bridge worker Islam Uddin who found work under the PRT or "Provincial Reconstruction Team." "They say that they are better than the talibans because they help us, they reconstruct our homeland", reflects ten year old Ferous Khan. So far, the USA has pumped 91 million dollars into Khowst alone for the construction of roads, schools, hospitals and public buildings. "Afghanistan is where 9-11 started", says PRT Commander Dave Adams. For him, success lies in helping the people "cast off the influences of al Qaida and the tyranny of the Taliban and lift themselves up."
