At night Aziz smuggles the "50, 100 even 200 people a day wanting to leave" along Turkey's backroads, in an attempt to slip illegally into Greece. Some are intellectuals or artists, others families have been tortured or killed. The expensive and hazardous journey may take them as far as Germany - or might end in a matter of hours in a Turkish jail... Many Europeans are worried they will be swamped by this human tide of have-nots. One French politician says "We could organise a boat to send them back where they came from.
