Japan's recession has prompted fears that as businessmen cut back on their spending, one of the country's most recognisable and traditional communities, the geisha, may be left feeling the crunch.
A waning interest in traditional Japanese arts is putting pressure on the community. 'The economic downturn is challenging a tradition already fighting demons of apathy and modernity.' Geisha have long-entertained wealthy clientele, but with fewer than 1,000 performing artists left, it seems it has become a dying art. 'People using geisha entertainment are decreasing.'
