Police Against The Sheiks A day after Barack Obama made his first visit to Iraq as US president, Government-allied Sunni paramilitaries are suspected of a series of attacks prompting fears that violence levels may be on the up.
Two years ago, Anbar was a hotspot for the Sunni insurgence against US forces, now a slow drive towards democracy has been replaced by tensions in the fight for power. Although the Chief of Police in Anbar said, "We do not want the sheiks and tribal leaders to govern our country", Obama has reiterated that the US is keen for the Iraqis to "take responsibility for their country". Some US military and Iraqi government officials however, have expressed concern that the violence may rise again as US troops are pulled out. A Sunni Tribal Leader admits, "Our police force is not yet sufficiently trained".
