Anime is big business, important both economically and culturally throughout Japan. But a storm is brewing as pornographic characters take the lead in an effort to revitalise the once-booming industry.
Westerners often wonder what the attraction of the quirky characters is? It's domestic sales and exports contribute millions of yen to the Japanese economy. Recently however, the lack of younger viewers has spurned a new trend - anime porn - and it's growing fast. Toyoo Ashida, Industry chief says: "we must meet the shift in the market so we developed late-night anime". Disturbing new games such as 'RapeLay' has put the animation under further scrutiny.
