Bog Snorkelling

The quirky Welsh pastime of bog snorkelling

Bog Snorkelling There are few things the people of Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales, prefer to do on a Sunday afternoon than slip-on a wet-suit and take a dip in a freshly dug peat bog. The rules are simple - the quickest man, woman or child to cycle from one end of the bog to the other is crowned with the dubious honour of ‘World Mountain Bike Bog Snorkelling Champion.’
With only a snorkel protruding from the mire it’s a taxing sport. Veteran snorkeller explains the science: “You just keep pedalling for all you’re worth.” The addition of a Mountain Bike to the bog snorkelling proceedings was a twist dreamed-up by the local Publican. A keen inventor of extreme sports he’s currently working on his other favourite: the annual man vs. horse challenge. Confident of his theory that a man can beat a horse over 22 miles, he’s not put off by the horses 18 year run of victories. We wait to see if the wacky pastimes of Llanwrtyd Wells succeed in ousting snowboarding as Europe’s favourite extreme sport.
