Tourism Shock Venice is sinking under its ever-increasing influx of tourists. With a council that is determined to spend its tight budget on accommodating more of these invaders, the locals are growing impatient.
"You have to be as rich as Berlusconi to buy a place here. Venice has become one big Disneyland." Property in the lagoon city either becomes a hotel or lies empty, and imported souvenirs dominate every shop. The latest plans to build a subway beneath the lagoon are alarming conservationists: "We can only save Venice if we defend its harmony and fragile structures". With more and more residents forced to leave and traditional crafts dying out, is the city losing its soul?
