Zapatistas

Chiapas and the Zapatistas - Mexico's Brutal Land Dispute

Zapatistas ABC Australia reports on an ongoing feud between the Mexican government and the Zapatistas over land in Chiapas, the southernmost state in Mexico.
Chiapas is divided. On the one hand, farmers are campaigning to take back control of their ranches. On the other hand, the Zapatistas, a left-wing revolutionary political and militant group comprised mostly of indigenous people, continue to fight for control in the state of Chiapas. While a ceasefire has been called between the Mexican army and the Zapatistas, tensions remain high and many problems are yet to be solved. ABC Australia reports from Altamirano, talking to both sides of the dispute, and touching upon the violent and often disturbing consequences of the conflict.
