Crunch Time

Crunch Time As elections in Australia loom, Kevin Rudd is taking on the refugee issue. But as this potent report reveals his hardline policy is coming at a huge human cost as refugees continue to risk the gauntlet.
"It was awful, we had no lifejackets. When the boat sank it was horrible, the memory will never leave me", says a survivor of this latest tragedy. On the south coast of Java, the barely living are brought to shore along with the dead. New laws are in place on asylum but confusion reigns and the message isn't getting through to the hundreds still desperate to make the crossing. "They're much more traumatised by these new laws. There's no more options for them", says Barat Ali Batoor, a refugee now living in Melbourne. If the Coalition wins, many may find themselves being towed back but still there's no guarantee the boats will stop leaving the fateful shores of Indonesia. "If we cause people to be killed at sea, both Canberra and Jakarta will be equally to blame."
