Killer Band

The Indian prison swapping punishment for percussion

Killer Band In a city that reported one murder a day last month, justice for killers is usually swift.
With chilling enthusiasm a prison officer explains how he hangs three men at a time. This is the usual exit for murderers under India's tough penal codes. Yet in this system there is also room for Lucknow, a progressive model prison maintained by influential liberals. After displaying years of good behaviour inmates can be transferred here where prisoners don't just serve time - they count it out in four/four rhythm in the prison's brass band. The murderous band are even available for hire. At the local convent school their drums and trumpets lead out a parade. Such band jobs are welcome relief, yet the reality of prison is never far away. "Seeing those kids reminded us of our own kids back home and our eyes all filled with tears."
