Right to Stay

Right to Stay More than half of Nairobi's population lives in slums. In the Mukuru slum, one of the biggest in Nairobi, a group of residents have gone to court to demand the end of forced evictions and their right to land.

Village elder Jack Omondi is leading the group. They are suing several government bodies and more than a dozen people, including former president Daniel arap Moi. "I pay 1000 shillings a month in rent, but my shack has been demolished over 10 times", he says. Their lawyer, Anthony Murithi, explains, "It's groundbreaking; if we succeed we will have a foothold upon which to claim public land that was given to a select few at the expense of the masses".
