Greste Verdict

Greste Verdict The heavy sentence handed down to Australian journalist Peter Greste and his Al Jazeera colleagues has been widely condemned. Reporter Yaara Bou Melhem spent the day of the verdict in Cairo with Peter's brothers.
Andrew and Michael Greste have spent almost 4 months in Cairo since their brother's incarceration, making use of every available prison visit. We catch up with them the night before the verdict. Fresh off the plane from New South Wales, Andrew is wary of the "fair and open trial" that Peter has been promised. At first there was no translator in court for Peter, and the evidence against him has been bizarre. "The prosecutors did not present a single piece of evidence. There wasn't a single piece of evidence in court," shouts Peter Greste, caged in court. Yet Andrew and Michael seem as if they are at the end of their tortuous journey, preparing to celebrate justice. "It's not just Peter's freedom that's at stake, it's principles of free speech and journalism in Egypt. It's a momentous occasion and it could be a turning point for him", smiles Michael. When the devastating verdict is reached, the brothers are winded by the shock, but vow that this isn't the end. "We won't give up the fight, that's for sure" says Andrew, "he's done nothing wrong".
