Scientists predict it will be a difficult few decades. Rising ocean temperatures speed up Arctic melting and intensify jet streams, causing extreme weather to spread across the globe. "It's simple physics", claims Dr Wijffels, who says the water cycle is key to understanding weather systems. Warmer air is more moist, which explains why earthquakes, floods and extreme storms are becoming more frequent. As the world gets warmer, it will only get wilder.
