The Kurdish Fight Continues
Kurds persist in their push for freedom
We get access into Southeast Turkey and find a Kurdish community still committed to achieving greater autonomy. Behind the closed doors of Kurdish homes are stories of continuing military oppression.
Through his tears a father rages for the loss of his 14 year-old son Saban. The police kicked him to death. Political discussion in the Kurdish towns is confined to the offices of Hadep, Turkey's only legally recognized Kurdish party. Kurdish mayors here recognized by the EU as the legitimate representatives of Turkey's Kurds, are fighting for their minority rights. Speaking here Feridun Celik, one of the arrested mayors speaks up for investment, while Mayor Jihan Sinjar, whose husband was assassinated, supports those who have been intimidated by Turkish authorities. They want to live normal lives, to live humanely. The arrest of democratically elected Kurdish politicians will again raise EU concerns for Turkey's EU membership as it again demonstrates its poor regard for human rights, especially those of the Kurds.
