Disaster Zone

The humanitarian disaster in Kuito, Angola

Disaster Zone This was the first report to come out of the Angolan town of Kuito after April 1999. We witness an unfolding humanitarian disaster and one MSF team’s relentless effort to help the forgotten Angolans.
The local hospital bares testimony to the results of UNITA's siege of Kuito. There is no food and no medicine. Pot-bellied children, many with amputated limbs, fill the wards. The war is indiscriminate in its victims, something which Jean and Natasha have become used to as Médecins Sans Frontières volunteers. The UNiss long gone and there are only 15 aid workers left in Angola. “The real solution is not here. It appears to be out of our reach." The MSF faces a new foe, Pellagra, a rare and often fatal vitamin deficiency disease. At a MSF screening clinic they find many refugees with the tell-tale ring of spots around their necks. “We are getting more and more refugees; the longer we stay in this clinic, the harder it gets”. For Veerle the new MSF volunteer, the next few months entail massive stress as the mortality rates have skyrocketed. The MPLA and UNITA forces are digging in for another campaign but the 200,000 refugees taking shelter may not last through the fight. The Nobel Peace Prize may bolster morale in the short term but it's peace which is required; something which this Angolan generation knows nothing about.
